We will be doing a Biography Project. One of the students, Kennedi, has volunteered to write a little information about it...take it away Kennedi....
Calling all parents! From this day until Dec. 4 we are going to be working on biogrophy projects. We have chosen many people like Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, and George Washington Carver! On Dec. 4 we will show our presentations. We hope some of you will be here!(We also have to write a paper and make a timeline!)
Thank you, Kennedi! The students are very excited about their projects. They have received information on the project to use as guidelines and they have seen examples of timelines and speeches/presentations. I will give some reminders about what should be being done over the holiday break.
With that I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

Great Week...
We had a great week. It was red ribbon week this past week. We had a lot of fun wearing our sweats, sunglasses and jeans and red shirts to show our support in being drug free. We won the door decorating door contest too. Kennedi came up with an awesome idea for a door...No "body" likes drugs...and everyone made a skeleton and made speech bubbles to go with them. I will post pictures next week of the door, it really did turn out cute!
The kids worked very hard this week on vocabulary, spelling, reading, narrative writing, problem solving and data collection. We had a lot of fun with the data collection by completing surveys this week involving raisins, our heights/heights of first graders, our families and siblings. We learned more specifically about line plots, mean, median, mode, and range throughout this week. Data will be a skill we visit frequently the rest of the year. We also have been practicing a new approach to problem solving. You can ask your child about it....a later blog may come on that. The kids really worked hard this week in their studies.
This week we also earned our 25th link. If you didn't know we earn links in the hallway and other places by receiving compliments for their behavior. When 25 links are earned a celebration is in order. This weeks celebration was long overdue. They have worked extremely hard to earn 25 links by good hallway behavior, cafeteria behavior and specials behavior. I decided to treat the students with a treat, drink, and a craft. The students earned some juice, some chocolate covered popcorn, and a craft- making a fall frame. We had a lot of fun eating our snacks and making the frames. I can't wait until our next celebration!
This next week we will be working on some new things. In math, we will be starting our unit on fractions...this will include addition/subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators, multiplication/division of fractions...and more concepts to come. I am very excited about teaching this unit, there are a lot of new discoveries the students will come to see. In reading, we will still be working on story elements, summaries, and retelling what they read. Grammar, we will be studying subjects, predicates and different types of sentences. We will be wrapping up narrative writing this week. I hope to have some students share their narratives on the blog.
Upcoming Events:
-October Book It Reading Logs need to be turned in Monday, November 2, 2009
-No School on Tuesday, November 3, 2009- It is a teacher work day.
-Brumby's International Bazaar- Friday, November 6, 2009 from 5:30-8:00- It is going to be a lot of good entertainment, food, arts, and crafts!!!
I think that is about it for now. I am sorry it has been awhile since I have blogged. I hope to keep updating more often. Thanks for reading! If you have any questions/comments/ concerns please let me know! Have a safe and Happy Halloween!!!!

Out of Town
I wanted to let you know that I will be out of the classroom the next few days. I have had a death in my family and will have to travel to Florida for the memorial service. Please speak to your child about being on their best behavior and doing the right thing. Please if you have any questions email me, I will try to check it when I am out. I am not sure how long I will be gone but please just keep me and my husband's family in your thoughts through this time. Thank you and have a nice week!

Testing and more....
Yes, I agree we test our students too much! This Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday is a Mock CRCT Practice test for our students. We will be gathering data on our students to see where they are right now and what areas we need to really focus on in the upcoming months. Monday will be the reading section, Tuesday the language arts section and Wednesday the math section. This is not something for you to worry your child about, it is just going to give us a good picture of where we need to go. If you have any questions please let me know.
This week we will not have a new spelling list or vocabulary list. We will be taking this week to review the spelling rules we have learned this far this year. In math we will be studying divisibility, multiples, factors, prime and composite numbers. I have some fun ways to cover these new math concepts. In writing, we will be starting on narrative writing. We have a lot to cover this month. It will be a busy one but fun one!
Upcoming Events and Happenings:
-Book Fair is this week.
-Tutoring starts this week. (for students that have been notified)
-PTA Dance this Thursday. The book fair will be open during the dance.
